Blog of the week

This morning I saw these 2 little girls waiting for their school bus. The school bus soon came and they were immediately involved in an animated conversation with the conductor. Suddenly one girl gave a shout of joy and to my amusement did a little skip and a dance. Turns out their school was closed and had declared a holiday for some reason.I think I heard her shout " No school!! No school!! Yipeee”. This got me wondering, what if my conductor said something like " No office today “, what would I do? Would I be overjoyed? Hmm infact I would just grunt and go watch a movie or play Badminton or read a book. How I miss my school days!! * sigh ================================== Well imagine this scenario. A group of boys and girls stand next to a traffic cop and are waiting for him to help them cross the road by stopping the traffic. He's helpless as its rush hour and the volume of vehicles is too high .He waits patiently for an opening. The kids get restless. One of the boys, a little kid, shouts " One.. Two... Three.. Go ". What do you think the cop would do :) uhahahahhaha ================================== SP knows how to make the reader ponder. Must learn from him. ( Vc bows) . is-diversity-in-taste-contradiction In this post he writes "..is it fair to think that someone doesn't have good taste just because there is no particular type of music he likes? I think yes. " This got me thinking ... what type of music do I listen to? I listen to all types of music from Pundit Ravishankar's Instrumentals to the flute recitals of Pandit Hari Prasad, to Nelly, Kelly and Jenny, old Hindi numbers like Mohd Rafi's 1965 track. "Pukaarataa Chalaa Huu.N Mai.N Galii Galii Bahaar Kii Bas Ek Chhaa.Nv Zulf Kii Bas Ik Nigaah Pyaar Kii Pukaarataa Chalaa Huu.N Mai.N " Does this mean I have no taste in music? No individuality? Eeeew this guy is good. art-is-symbolism.html Check his comments. And then he pens this post lemmings-to-sea.html. You almost think that this guy is nuts because he speaks about the forbidden truth which we are obviously not ready to accept .Right ? Wrong , because in the last paragraph he says "I personally disagree with most of it. " Now you are stranded. Well atleast I am.

Ok Vc,
First things first: The cop will make a Tim Montgomeryesque dash across a road with raging traffic, he'll reach ur office before u do by ur bus :P

Woaow Vc has offered a tribute to SP's blog. Great! I remember mine was blog of the week here. That was ages back siggghhh. Here take the sceptre, SP, and my crown. I am proud of u kid.
Ok, back to reality.

About music lovers I know two kinds: ones who can listen to anything from cacophonic to classical and still enjoy each genre depending on their mood. It does not necessarily mean they lack taste. Just that they are more experimental and flexible on their enjoyment or perhaps the constant bombardment of some "popular" yet "kitschy" tunes have forced them into liking stuff that they wouldn't normally have given a second listening to. There are some who are very restrictive and choosy about what they listen to, they just shut off or go nuts when they hear cacophony. Simply because they cut-off an entire genre for they consider it cacophony does not mean that they have excellent taste. They are just denying themselves an entire variety without giving it a patient hearing.
Moreover, music itself has so many aspects that define it : the score and the beats, the singer's voice, the instrumentalist's capabilities, the lyrics and the mood of the song. So people can like a particular song for any of its above attributes.
But yes, liking something just because of its popularity is the case of lemmings at the sea. And *ahem* that applies to that K song of urs Vc.

Omg SP u actually followed up that comment of mine.
Ok Let's go through it the whole hog.
I read this story in an RD issue ages ago.
A painter was holding an exhibition of his latest paintings. The critics were reviewing this particular landscape which had a large black blotch across it. These brainy dudes were discussing the philosophy behind that blotch at length with the debate swinging between the "imperfection of nature" and "the darkness that transcends life". Then they decided to ask the artist himself who was all along to this interesting debate. He laughed and said that his kid had splattered it across the painting the previous night and there wasn't much he could do to correct it at such short notice.
Critics probably read too much into everything. And probably u r also guilty of doing something like that. When u talk about gravity defying stunts in the movie you might end up saying that it symbolizes an elevated mental prowess of the protagonist or some such glossy explanation.
So I guess critics actually should not be the ones to explain art- they are very much outsiders and by and large don't even know what effort goes behind each piece of art. The best thing to do is to get the interpretation straight from the horse's mouth and then decide for urself whether it makes sense or nonsense.

Commercialised art is an oxymoron?? Uhh. I guess I explained it as art for monetary gains.

Psst Vc on whose side r u?

The fact that the blotch on the painting evinced such keen reactions from the high-brow critics is precisely the reason that makes me wonder if modern art is shallow if not outright kitsch. By not depicting a certainty, a reality in form the modern day artists hide behind interpretations using them as an aegis to shield their mediocrity. I don't know why I am starting the debate all over again, but that’s what my heart says.

Well actually I couldnt make my entrance because of wedding stuff. But I'm here now.

Am glad my posts could make Vc think, which, as I noted earlier, is a rarely recorded event in history :)

Kirthi, as usual I think I need a long conversation with you to help you understand 1% of what I was trying to say. If I were the kind who shuts out an entire genre of music deeming it cacophony as soon as I heard it, I have no right to be writing on music. I may shut out a genre of music, but only after I JUDGE it. And every judge gives a fair trial, and starts with the surmise of "innocent until proven guilty".

For example, Vc asked me this week whether I listen to rap. I told him no, and it was not out of whim or reflex. There was a time when I used to listen to artistes like Apache Indian, but I moved on to things I found better later. I have listened to other rap songs on occasion, including "mixed" genre songs. I was telling Vc that the rap content of Linkin Park's songs drives me nuts that they ruin the name of rock music.

My point, though, is that you must have likes and dislikes. If you just say that you don't mind listening to any genre of music, I can't help but think that you're not interested in music at all. How do I say this in a manner you would identify with? Hmmm... remember when you asked which of your posts I really liked. If I'd just said that I liked them all, you would simply think none of them had any kind of impression on me.

As for getting art interpretation straight from the horse's mouth, I have one thing to say here. Very often, when I write a poem, I get temporarily transported into another plane of existance ('tis lovely, Vc, I wish somebody could experience it with me). I may spin allegories, metaphors and analogies into a beautiful abstract weave that I hadn't visualized when I'd begun. Usually I don't plan on bringing out the facets that I ultimately did.

My emphasis is entirely on what we define as art, on the idea of abstract messages, and the stamp of the creative artist. It is true that sometimes the so-called connoiseurs overdo it, and read into things that don't even exist, but that again is only because of commercialization, and they feel pressured into giving an interpretation of a message that doesn't exist. But most of the time, there is a hidden beauty and a message that is wrapped in the package of abstract symbolism, and somehow that adds to its appeal infinitely but oh, so softly and subtly. There doesn't exist a class of people called art lovers, or artistes, for that matter, for nothing Kirthi.

And, forgot to say, Thanks Vc! :)

Thanks TT , HOH ...
Kirthi : here's a pattar for mentioning that K song .. but its a visual treat .. haiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii...

and But your views on music is a bit..hmmm ....

Critics actually should not be the ones to explain art-
But Kirthi do you think this applies to even art films ? I guess not...

SP..(Am glad my posts could make Vc think, which, as I noted earlier, is a rarely recorded event in history ) Hello last time i pondered ,Tsunami waves created havoc . Last week i was thinking and heavy rains lashed Gujarat.. I think i'll leave the thinking to other people.
